With 500 years of history, Florida’s delights range from gilded to glam. It’s no surprise so many visitors become permanent residents.

For some people, any state that has more than a thousand golf courses is reason enough to relocate. Yet, Florida’s 1,250-plus courses are a fraction of the attraction. The land of sun and sand is also the land of lifestyle: Ocala luxury horse farms, Palm Beach mansions, Miami penthouses. The attraction is global. Florida property is found in luxury real estate portfolios worldwide.

The state is built on agriculture, construction, international trade, aerospace and, of course, tourism. Disney World, Universal Studios, the Kennedy Space Center and SeaWorld keep tourist dollars flowing in, though they can overshadow quieter pleasures.

Many of those pleasures are natural like the Everglades, Florida Keys and the lakes of Central Florida. Others are cultural like museums devoted to the works of Salvador Dali, Louis Comfort Tiffany and Dale Chihuly.

Florida is the only state to border both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Posh turf along its 1,800-mile coastline is where well-heeled home buyers find their fit. Florida is flush with gated communities that offer privacy, security and country club-type amenities. It’s also one of only a handful of states that levies no personal income tax.

The booming city of West Palm Beach features condominiums with Intracoastal views. Over the bridge, the island of Palm Beach is the place to find architectural showplaces on low-density zoned parcels. In Boca Raton, it’s still possible to find an Addison Mizner-designed gem. Naples draws sun celebrants for its beachfront estates. And the ultralux condo developments of Miami feed off an international energy that’s turned the city into its own brand.

Increasingly, the state’s part-time population is being augmented with a growing entry into the market: pre-retirees. These professionals, largely Baby Boomers, are still years away from retirement, but they’re capitalizing on current housing values by buying now, confident Florida has what it takes to make their golden years the go-go years.
