For the eco-conscious, finding a luxurious green apartment has never been easier.

Throughout the country, new developments are being built sustainably and responsibly, while older buildings are being retrofitting to meet the high standards of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), a rating system for green building, construction and maintenance recognized around the world.

With LEED in mind, luxury developers are embracing eco-friendly living strategies that go above and beyond local building codes. Compared to conventional construction, green buildings often incorporate recycled construction materials to help reduce landfill waste and employ alternative energy systems to reduce dependence on natural resources and cut down on harmful greenhouse gases.

Some buildings utilize recycled rainwater for green spaces and gardens. In fact, expansive green spaces, such as rooftop terraces, have become a welcome alternative to paving—and not just for their aesthetic value. Hard surfaces can create a “heat island effect,” which can cause temperatures to rise in dense urban areas.

Earth- and people-friendly buildings use toxin-free materials and more efficient ventilation systems to reduce mold and mildew. Studies have shown indoor air can contain substantially more pollutants than outdoor air. Buildings with low-emitting adhesives, paints, sealants and carpets in amenity and common areas ensure minimal off-gassing. Standard paints and fabrics with solvents can cause headaches, respiratory issues and skin irritations. Green practices can also go a long way in improving a tenant’s well-being while reducing the carbon footprint.

Residents can contribute by creating their own eco-smart living spaces using low or no-VOC (volatile organic compounds) wall paints and incorporating organic textiles in window treatments and upholstery. Even little things have an effect such using green cleaning products, incandescent light bulbs with more energy-efficient fluorescent fixtures and adding indoor plants to the interior design scheme. Plants help filter the atmosphere, providing residents with the ultimate must-have for a quality green life: clean air to breathe.
