Denver is situated on the High Plains with Rocky Mountain views that dominate the landscape. The mountains are integral to the city’s identity. State laws ban the building of any structure that blocks the view of mountains from the Colorado State Capitol. 

The mountains also shape the lifestyle. Denverites are avid mountain bikers, skiers and hikers. With sunshine 300 days a year, golf is a year-round sport. In the rarefied air of the Mile High City, golf balls go 10 percent farther. 

This one-time mining town has the 10th largest downtown in the United States, anchored by three professional sports stadiums, a massive performing arts complex and a collection of museums including the well-respected Denver Art Museum. A 2006 extension to the building by world renowned architect Daniel Libeskind features thousands of titanium panels that reflect the sunlight. The building has become a destination in itself. 

The city’s architecture spans more than a century. In the 1970s, a preservation group called Historic Denver was established to save the region’s aging but architecturally significant structures from demolition.  

Denver still has a few single-family homes from its pre-statehood (1876) territorial days. Many homes, reflecting a wide array of architectural styles over the decades--Italianate, Queen Anne, Tudor, Craftsman and bungalow--have been lovingly restored. Newer residences and developments are more common in Denver’s suburbs. 

Cherry Creek is a neighborhood sometimes thought of as Denver’s Beverly Hills. It is a walker’s village of art galleries, coffee shops, tony restaurants and upscale shopping. A bike path connects Cherry Creek to downtown Denver, just three miles away.  Hipsters flock to Lower Downtown, commonly referred to as LoDo. A historic district, the enclave is heavy in Victorian and early 20th century homes as well as loft conversions. Those seeking large lots find them in fashionable neighborhoods like Belcaro and Hilltop or in premier low-density suburbs like Cherry Hills Village.

Residents never feel hemmed in. Country comes fast. The Rockies are just a dozen miles west of town.
