About : Coolatore House Rosemount, Westmeath, Westmeath

A beautiful Victorian country house built circa 1866 and set within a perfect pocket estate comprising some 15 acres, the pleasure grounds retaining the meticulously planned original Victoriana layout and form.

Elegantly appointed the house is particularly evocative of the design style and outlook of the time and while comprising some 8,773 square feet of accommodation the dressed limestone exterior allows Coolatore to nestle easily into the sylvan setting and wider pastoral countryside. Inside an impressive reception hall extends to double height and includes a Cathedral like ceiling timberwork, a marble chimney piece and parquet timber flooring.

Grouped off this fine hall are the suite of fine receptions rooms which include a large drawing room, dining room, library and a family room. All generously proportioned with tall ceilings and large windows giving good natural light. A cloak room has a separate WC. A country style kitchen is serviced by a Butler’s pantry and scullery and links from the back hall to an outside courtyard with an array of stores, one now the laundry room.

Upstairs the rooms are equally spacious and accommodation includes 6 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a linen room. Interconnecting bathrooms mean the layout can provide 2 large private suites. This floor is accessed from either the principal carved timber staircase or a secondary rear staircase. A Gibb, or secret, door in the reception hall leads to the basement, where a suite of 4 rooms create a fun entertainment space and includes a fully fitted bar. Exposed rustic stone walls and flagged stone flooring adding to a jovial ambience. An external door leads up a suite of steps to link this entertainment space with the garden terraces, themselves all facing south and linking to the main reception rooms from large double French doors.

The grounds are quite magical with the delightfully formally arranged Victorian gardens surrounding the house, mainly arranged around the South and West facing facades, linking seamlessly from gravelled pathways to the glorious woodland. Mature and with numerous specimen trees and shrubs there are woodland walkways throughout the small estate, which make the grounds seem much larger than the manageable 15 or so acres and include exquisite ‘rock gardens’ and ‘secret gardens’ and even include a waxwork Elvis Presley.

Abounding with rivers, lakes, ringforts and medieval castles Westmeath is a magical county but often overlooked by those rushing from Dublin to Galway or other parts of the west coast. Within a few miles of Coolatore are the twin historic hills of Cnoc Aiste and Uisneach; there’s Lough Ennell and Lilliput, where Jonathan Swift first conceived Gulliver’s Travels; and Locke’s Distillery in Kilbeggan, now a museum.

The closest villages for supplies, but also a selection of pubs, restaurants and cafes, are Moate, Rosemount [1.3 miles] and Ballymore. Within the locality there are many family run pubs providing fine Guinness, Irish music and hospitality. The large towns of Mullingar and Athlone are both a 25 minute drive away. Several of Ireland’s best golf courses are nearby, including Mullingar, Glasson and Esker golf courses. Dublin and Galway cities are each approximately 1 hours driving distance.
