About this property

About 220 South Main Street

A private drive and sprawling lawn present this 2.4-acre estate in the heart of Southampton Village. The late 19th century residence opens to a double-height entry with powder room. Original hardwood floors and details are everywhere, from the living room and dining room to the pantry that leads to the chef’s kitchen with professional appliances and breakfast area. The adjoining great room with fireplace opens to a dramatic, modern sun room. Staff quarters located off the kitchen include two bedrooms, a bath, and laundry. Up the main staircase to the second floor, the master suite hosts a dressing area, bath, and deck. In addition, two guest bedrooms share a bath, and three more bedroom suites complete the floor. The full basement contains a wine room, storage, and mechanicals. Outside, the grounds feature a heated 20’x40’ pool, and pool house. Beyond, a covered patio looks onto an all-weather tennis court. The garage houses two vehicles, and the property includes its own generator.

About this area

The Gold Coast of Long Island is a 20-mile or so strip along the water’s edge of the North Shore. A century ago, it was a popular summer retreat for the likes of the Vanderbilts, Woolworths and Guggenheims. F. Scott Fitzgerald was awed by the concentration of wealth he found here when he began his masterpiece, “The Great Gatsby.” At one point, Gilded Age estates stood by the hundreds. Over time, most fell victim to the wrecking ball.
