Ferdinand II for his mistress, the opera singer Elisa Hensler, Countess of Edla, whom he later married. D. Fernando spared no expenses in transforming Quinta da Princesa into a palace fit for a countess and built a secret lover’s passage connecting the palace with his own royal palace. There are still many architectural features of the palace that still remain, such as carved doors, hand-painted tiles and the original stables with two carriages.
