As a result of the breakup of the Catholic Church in England in 1632, caused by King Henry VIII, an English Seminar was founded in Portugal as a donnation of D. Pedro Coutinho. This same Seminar would be later known as the Convento dos Inglesinhos. Subject to successive changes in the XVIIIth and XIXth centuries, it survived the Napoleonic wars and the Republic Revolution in early XXth century, maintaining its manerista and pombalina identity. Only in 1976 it was cleared of the Catholic Church with the return of its inhabitants back to England.
