In 1281, when Serpa and all the lands of the Left Bank of the Guadiana were still under the dominion of Castile, Alfonso X established the demarcation of the county, and awarded him the first charter, the Seville. After a century of military and diplomatic adventures with the Christian reconquest of the Alentejo, Serpa gets from D. Dinis, in 1295, a new charter to the city. In 1513, Serpa received a charter of King Manuel, who, before the King, had been Master of Serpa. This charter says little about the organization and political and social activity in the county. Serpa was by then, a major dry port in the kingdom. In the fifteen hundreds (1500s) Serpa presented itself asone of the most important towns of the Alentejo and the kingdom itself, whose development was based on cereal agriculture and livestock but also powerful in the craft, turned to the trade, and an alliance very close to the king. Later, due to the Wars of Independence, the Napoleonic Invasions, and various contingencies, the countydrifted away from big cities where the trade was practiced, and was vetoed to the isolation in a mixture of pride and destiny. Today, with new roads, the development of turistic and leisureactivities in the province of Alentejo, Serpa is seen as a place to invest. Indeed its proximity to the Great Lake Alqueva, Spain and several international airports, makes this almost unknown region as a center of tourism development with focus on the components of Hunting, Fishing and Sports.
