The former residence of Governor Skeete lay in ruins until it was rediscovered in 2000 and lovingly restored to create a luxurious and comfortable family home with swimming pool and tropical gardens. Mangrove Plantation covers 195 acres of prime land and has uninterrupted, panoramic views across cane fields and wooded gullies towards the Caribbean sea, which is only 10 minutes’ drive away. Nestling among 20 acres of verdant gardens and manicured lawns the main house, carriage house and mill have been restored with meticulous attention to detail to create a spacious private house and great cottage that can comfortably accommodate fourteen people plus housekeeping staff. The buildings are constructed from coral stone excavated from the on-site quarry, which is now a lush secret garden. Painstaking care has been taken to combine original features with contemporary fittings. The property is luxuriously finished with artwork by Caribbean artists, bespoke Persian rugs, and West Indian plantation style furniture imported from Europe and America. Coconut, banana, papaya and breadfruit trees are dotted around the grounds and a historic bearded fig overhangs the quarry garden. A mature orchard of avocado, mango and guava is shared with the colony of green monkeys that visit the estate, and a monkey themed family room has been specially designed in their honour. Fully storm proof and self sufficient, the plantation house has its own generator and water supply. Designs exist for further development of the remaining out-buildings and more. All year round, the grounds are home to many species of birds including hummingbirds, doves and finches. Nature has reclaimed the old quarry that provided the cut coral stone used to construct all the plantation buildings. Tropical plants and trees thrive here, including one of the oldest bearded fig trees on the island. The high walled quarry has the potential to be a spectacular feature such as a cascading waterfall or orchid sanctuary, or it could be left as a secret wildlife garden for meditation and relaxation. Tantalizing reminders of the plantation’s history lie around the grounds. Next to the quarry, a small cave is scattered with fragments of pottery and other archaeological remains. The original plantation house foundations have been restored and left exposed as a feature. And a historic bridge links the plantation with the outside world across the northern gully. A mature orchard of citrus, avocado, plum and guava trees produces more than enough fruit to share with the local green monkeys and other wildlife. Banana, coconut, breadfruit and papaya trees also grow around the grounds. The main House, Carriage House and Mill stood in ruins for many years but are now fully renovated and restored. All the buildings are surrounded by gardens, gullies and agricultural land. The lush pasture surrounding the main building is ideal for keeping horses and other livestock, general agriculture, or for sports and leisure activities with ample space for tennis courts.
