Barns, Reborn as Homes - The Wall Street Journal

Still, these homes aren’t for everyone. [...] Buyers are “accustomed to more traditional room arrangements,” says Norman Callaway, managing member of Callaway Henderson Sotheby’s International Realty in Princeton, N.J., who is marketing a $4.4 million converted barn on 17 acres in Hopewell Township, N.J.

Last year, house hunters Alan Wiener and Patti Liberman fell in love with the Tulane Barn in Princeton, N.J. After spending 16 years in a traditional side-hall colonial, they were excited about living in a former dairy and hay barn that had undergone an “exquisite” restoration, says Ms. Liberman, an attorney.

Historic Tusculum Estate in Princeton | House Tour

A beautiful allée of Zelkova trees welcomes you to Princeton’s most historic, privately owned estate. It was originally built in 1773 by Reverend John Witherspoon, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and sixth president of Princeton University. Witherspoon named his house, Tusculum, after Cicero’s villa near Rome. The main residence was completely restored and enlarged in 1998, under the direction of Princeton architect, T. Jefferey Clarke.

Currently called the “Rod & Reel” room, Witherspoon’s private study now displays the present owner’s collection of fishing memorabilia. It is one of the four rooms on the 1st floor (which are original to the house) and contains many historical details such as the 1830′s mantle, an antique fireback, and a Vermont marble surround and hearth.

This spectacular stone barn is built of argillite shale, the same stone used for Princeton Univeristy’s historic Nassau Hall. Two huge Dutch doors open to the existing grassy ramp which was used by farm wagons. The floor, once used for threshing with hay storage above, now serves as a perfect party space with electricity adequate for modern bands. The Tusculum barn was recently featured in a book by Elric Endersby, of the New Jersey Barn Co., “BARN, Preservation and Adaption”.

The home and remaining farmland of famous American patriot Reverend John Witherspoon retains its historic farm context, while also serving as a residence for luxurious modern living.

The Jersey Shore: Resilient and Open for Business

From the pages of RESIDE® | Luxury Homes and Lifestyles Around the World | Spring 2013 Northeast United States Edition

It’s a reflection of the power of media and image saturation that an area as large as the coast of New Jersey—217 diverse miles of beaches, barrier islands, inlets, marshes, bays, boroughs, cities and townships—can so effectively be reduced to a single visual: the effects Hurricane Sandy had on the scenic, historic landscape of the Jersey Shore.

“The Shore’s taken a few licks in the past, and while this certainly was a good one there continues to be a pretty significant misconception about the level of impact that towns sustained,” says Keith Kernan, Managing Broker at Ward Wight Sotheby’s International Realty. His listings from Asbury Park to Brielle, for instance, largely escaped damage; the first few beach blocks in Manasquan, however, was buried in sand. Kernan understands that these parts of the Shore are beloved to New Jerseyans and wants to educate people about how quickly it’s recovered. To do that he’s created a series of promotional videos for guests and buyers in feeder markets. “The mindset is to show how things are progressing and to show the many folks who have called the Jersey Shore home for summers for such a long time that we’re open.”

Princeton, New Jersey Real Estate | Market Spotlight

princeton homes for sale

Princeton, New Jersey | $3,500,000 USD | Callaway Henderson Sotheby’s International Realty

“Princeton has officially entered the rebound phase of the real estate recovery and done so enthusiastically in the first quarter this year. Like in many markets, inventory is down (15% vs. last year) and contract sales are up (29% vs. last year) but the most noteworthy stat so far is the average sales price, which is up 8% vs. last year overall and 35% vs. the same period last year… the first increase of any substance since 2008. People that have a high level of wealth are willing to buy extraordinary properties at their discretion. Older, charming homes are coming back into favor, largely because the pricing has come down enough so the value is there for buyers.” Jud Henderson, broker associate and managing member Callaway Henderson Sotheby’s International Realty in Princeton, New Jersey.
