A propos de la région

Naxos, this little city island with endless stretches of sandy beaches, fertile valleys and mountain villages offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience to its visitors. Located in the centre of the Cycladic islands, Naxos is easy to get to from various points, by air and by sea, year round. The largest and loftiest (at 999m/3,247ft elevation) of the Cyclades archipelago, rocky Náxos is one of the few Greek islands that could actually feed itself, its goods and largely native produce (flocks of sheep and goats are everywhere) stand out, as does its laid-back vibe.

Its vast beaches and marble antiquities as well as the unique local flavors will make your heart skip a beat. Imagine an enormous Kouros dating back to 570 BC in the Flerio area, a 5.5-meter grayish statue lying beneath the trees in eternal slumber. Visit Portara, the entrance to the Temple of Apollo, a 6th century BC unfinished construction on the islet of Palatia at the port’s entry, which is the island’s other most distinctive archaeological site that survives today. The Temple of Apollo may have remained incomplete but its Portara entrance still stands today and has become a trademark of the island.

This serene and unadulterated location is blessed with rich agricultural activity. Since ancient time, Naxos has been the center of  grape vine and wine production, since is was an important meeting ground for the worship of god Dionysus. To this day grape cultivation is one of the fundamental occupations of the Naxians. Another famous local drink is the liqueur named Kitro, which is made by distilling the fragrant leaves of the Kiron Tree according to old family recipes.

The island features beaches that are among the most beautiful in Greece, a few minutes drive from villages where they still wear traditional dress, weave on old looms and live off the fruit of the land. Agia Anna is one of the island’s most cosmopolitan beaches. Plaka beach and Mikri Vigla, are also  very well known spots and a major draw for water sport enthusiasts. Windless Panormos offers a terrific view of the neighboring Koufonissia islands, from a point reached by a track starting at the beach. Another option is Psili Ammos, located in front of a cedar forest while serene Lionas ensures total relaxation on the beach’s white-colored pebbles.

Naxos draws sophisticated families from all around Europe and it is definitely a child-focused island. It’s a place to test the waters, to linger on the sand, have a go at windsurfing, marvel over the mysteries of ancient ruins.
