Although now a modern city of 1.5 million people, Kyoto remains a center of traditional Japanese art and crafts, culture and cuisine. Set in a picturesque basin surrounded by green wooded hills, the city is designed on a distinctive grid pattern and is easily accessible from Tokyo or Osaka by shinkansen 'bullet' train.
