Historic Warwick House

Warwick House is one of the finest and largest examples of early Victorian Gothic Revivalist-style houses remaining in New Zealand. Built in the 1840s by Alfred Fell, it is believed to be the oldest substantial family residence in the South Island.

Presently run as a luxury boutique hotel with a substantial owner’s wing in the same style, this versatile property offers many options with 14 bedrooms including seven guest suites and many wonderful period features including Victorian walnut paintwork effects and a four-storey octagonal tower with a large peaked lead roof.

Also popular as a function venue Warwick House has hosted many events from weddings to product launches, taking advantage of the grand ballroom, elegant dining room or the library for smaller groups. The large fully-restored ballroom has double level windows taking in views over Nelson and towards the sea beyond. The polished 28 millimetre sprung Matai dance floor, spectacular antique lead lights, chandeliers and the high ceiling create an ambience of grandeur.

Situated just off the Western Promenade in Nelson’s quiet dress circle of leafy lanes most rooms enjoy superb views looking out over Mount’s Bay and the Tasman Sea while the private gardens and patio allows guests and owners to enjoy the all-day sunshine the area affords.

Interesting architectural features include two large Oriel windows, five large bay windows, the ballroom and ballroom floor and other period fittings. All ceilings, walls, weatherboards and most doors are solid Kauri. The walls are all lathe and plaster while the roof is Welsh slate tile and the cast iron gates and gateposts were also brought out from England in the 1840s.
