Acerca de Sun Valley

In 1936, the chairman of the Union Pacific Railroad, W. Averell Harriman, purchased 4,300 acres in central Idaho. The idea was to build a ski resort in the Rocky Mountains as a way to encourage westward train travel. It worked. It was named Sun Valley and within the year, “America’s first destination ski resort” opened.

Sobre la zona

Sun Valley is the name of the world-famous ski resort, as well as the small, European-styled village east of Ketchum.  The name also encompasses the 30-mile stretch that is the Wood River Valley, an area filled with towns, rivers, mountains, gulches, campgrounds, and cliffs.  Sun Valley is home to phenomenal mountain scenery, unlimited year-round recreational offerings, and down-to-earth people.  All of this makes Sun Valley, whether it is Ketchum, Hailey, Bellevue, or elsewhere, one of the most desirable places in the country to live.

Stanley and the Salmon River Basin lie just about an hour north of Sun Valley.  Cresting Galena Summit provides an entirely different view of the area, and people that live and own property in the Stanley area do so because of precisely that.  Grand ranches, lakefront cabins, and mountain lodges predominate, and life in The Idaho Alps moves at a much different pace, with different priorities.
