A native of Texas, S. Michael Faubion has lived in Washington since 1976. After a 35-year career in public service and the arts, he began a second career in real estate in 2012. He attended the University of Texas at Austin as an undergraduate, majoring in a liberal arts honors program. He continued his education at UT's Lyndon Baines Johnson School of Public Affairs, earning a master's degree with a concentration in public arts policy.

His career was spent at the National Endowment for the Arts, a small federal agency with an outsized reputation. Holding several positions in the Visual Arts Program, he was present during the turbulent years of "the culture wars," witnessing the controversies with Congress and artists Robert Mapplethorpe, Andres Serrano, and Karen Finley. Beginning in 2000, Mr. Faubion was appointed as NEA's Director of Council Operations, where he worked directly with the Chairman of the agency and its board of directors, the Presidentially-appointed National Council on the Arts. He planned, rehearsed, and managed the Council's three annual meetings and coordinated its review of thousands of grants projects per year.

In March 2012, he joined his partner, John T. Mahshie, at TTR Sotheby's International Realty. In this new association, he balances his experience with organizational management, interpersonal relations, and the Washington community with his interests in the arts and architectural history, gardening and the American landscape, and international cultural travel.
