Among Maryland’s many boast-worthy statistics is one that catches people by surprise. It has the most millionaires per capita. Maryland is the nation’s wealthiest state with the highest household income and median home value.
Much of that wealth is concentrated in Baltimore and the suburbs around the power hub of Washington, DC. The state is a major center for research and development with more than 400 biotech companies located here.
Geographically, Baltimore is small, yet diverse, incorporating dunes, marshlands, rolling hills and mountains. The eastern, southern and west portions have a more rural quality and Marylanders take advantage of nature’s offerings. Fishing and boating are popular pastimes. Come winter, skiing is added to the mix. Fall foliage is spectacular, particularly in the west.
Communities along the Chesapeake Bay, which runs 200 miles from the Susquehanna River to the Atlantic, is Maryland’s soul, a repository of blue crabs and maritime traditions. Situated bayside is the state capital of Annapolis, a historic city of brick-paved streets lined with more 18th and 19th century structures than any other in America. It’s most known for the United Station Naval Academy, the National Sailing Hall of Fame and its tidewater cuisine.
Baltimore is Maryland’s largest city, on the Patapsco River, which empties into the Chesapeake. It is a patchwork of pretty neighborhoods with lush landscaping, classic architecture and plentiful parks. Famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead designed several of Baltimore’s garden suburbs.
The Washington suburbs in Maryland such as Chevy Chase, Potomac, Rockville and Kensington have some of the choicest real estate and most elite zip codes. They have a lot in common. They all share an educated workforce, walkable downtowns, lively dining and well-supported cultural scenes. Bethesda, for instance, regularly hosts literary events, concerts and art events such as the Bethesda Art Walk, in which galleries and art studios open their doors to the public.
