Hidden Valley Country Club began in 1957 when Fort Douglas Country Club purchased 284 acres of land at the current Sandy location to replace their golf course that was located on the campus of the University of Utah. Since the Fort Douglas golf course was on public land and could not be held privately, the University began operating the golf course in 1959; which is the same year Hidden Valley opened the original 18-hole golf course designed by the renowned architect William Bell, Jr. from Pasadena, California. In 1979 the Club decided to construct an additional nine holes of golf for approximately $441,000. Local golf course architect William Neff was hired for the design work and in the spring of 1980 the additional nine holes were open for play. Today, those additional golf holes are referred to as the Mountain Nine and have some of the most scenic golf holes in the Salt Lake Valley.
