On a truly unique location with direct access to the Kagerplassen, is the listed country house “Groot Leerust” with a beautiful, architecturally-designed boxwood front garden, romantic backyard, swimming pool and boat jetty on a 1955 m2 plot.
The country estate “Groot Leerust” dates from the 18th century and is situated on the river Leede and is in a prominent location in the centre of Warmond, near Leiden. With a living area of 439 m2 with 9 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms and surrounded by all the greenery, the garden and Park Groot Leerust, it is a true pleasure to stay here.
The monumental country house was built in two phases. In 1717, the Englishman Benjamin Breadly had the present back house built on the remains of a 17th-century farmhouse, to which the front house was added in 1844. This has given the house its current appearance.
Country estate “Groot Leerust” is surrounded by a beautiful garden, landscaped under the architecture of Eugénie Andre de la Porte in a French formal style. Today, part of this garden is freely accessible as Park Groot Leerust. In 1953, this part of the garden was split off and opened to visitors as a public park and has been owned by the municipality ever since. On the water side of the park, there is a charming tearoom from 1815.
The townhouse serves as a private residence. It is a national monument and is in very good condition.
The monumental townhouse is located between the Burgemeester Ketelaarstraat and the river De Leede. This makes the location of the estate unique:it borders the beautiful, water-rich nature reserve “de Kagerplassen” and the view over the windmill of the Zwanburgerpolder and the Leede is magnificent. On beautiful days, you can see one boat after the other sailing on the Kagerplassen. In the landscape style park, you will also find centuries-old trees and numerous birds.
