Cypress, Texas is a part of the greater metropolitan Houston but retains the atmosphere of an East Texas village – a winning combination that draws residents to the area. The area called Cypress straddles US Highway 290 twenty miles northwest of Houston and is an unincorporated part of Harris County completely inside the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the city. There are no municipal boundaries and the community is defined by the zip codes of its subdivisions. One of Harris County’s most affluent zip codes, 77429, is in the Cypress area. Cypress was an old Indian settlement when German settlers moved in during the 1840s. Their legacy exists in the many German place and street names throughout the area including Huffmeister and Telge Roads, and Matzke Elementary School. Cypress is home to the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas, Tin Hall, established 1889 (an earlier structure, c. 1878, burned). With the discovery of oil along the Texas Gulf coast early in the 20th-cen
