Sugar Land, in Fort Bend County, Texas, incorporated in 1959, is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. Located 20 miles southwest of Houston, Sugar Land has transformed from a rural farm-and-ranch economy to a diversified and expanding economic base. Sugar Land was named for its sugar industry which began on land granted to Samuel M. Williams in 1828 when Texas was still part of Mexico. Williams and his brothers operated Oakland plantation and grew cotton, corn and sugarcane. The brothers sold Oakland to Benjamin Terry and William J. Kyle in 1853. Terry became famous as the commander of Terry’s Texas Rangers during the Civil War and it was he who gave the town its name – Sugar Land. In 1908, the Kempner family of Galveston purchased Oakland and founded the Imperial Sugar Company. Its Sugar Land refinery is one of the few still operating in the United States.
