The town of Barnstable is made up of seven villages and is the largest community both in land area and population on Cape Cod. Public and private beaches are plentiful in its many villages, encompassing both Cape Cod Bay on the north side and Nantucket Sound on the south side. It is also the center of county institutions such as the court system and registry of deeds. Hyannis, often is referred to as the Hub of the Cape and is known for its sprawling shopping districts and its many fine restaurants.
