Ever walk into a home and feel uplifted? Or more relaxed? It may be the colors in the design scheme at play. Whereas orange is energizing<\/a> and blue feels soothing<\/a>, bright red, which our series on color in luxury home design turns to next, elicits stronger emotions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople fall into a love-or-hate camp with red more than any other color, even orange,\u201d says Lisa Shaffer, chief executive and creative director of Lisa & Leroy<\/a>, an interior design firm based in Washington, D.C. \u201cIt really is the most energetic of all the primary colors.\u201d It also has deep cultural associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stockholm, Sweden<\/a> | Sweden Sotheby\u2019s International Realty<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Sweden, where \u201cFalun red\u201d cabins trimmed in white dot the countryside, the paint\u2014initially made in the 16th century using byproducts from copper mines\u2014has come to symbolize the nation\u2019s heritage. A former rectory<\/a>, 20 minutes from downtown Stockholm, has lots of orange undertones in its warm red exterior, says Shaffer, which the terracotta roof helps draw out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bright white millwork also makes the color striking, she says, while the blue of the nearby water helps set it off. \u201cIt almost acts like an accent,\u201d she says of the red shade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snowmass Village, Colorado<\/a> | Aspen Snowmass Sotheby\u2019s International Realt<\/a>y<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set on 102 picturesque acres between Aspen and Snowmass Village in Colorado, Brush Creek Ranch<\/a> has a similarly red exterior, albeit in a bluer shade. Here, the navy shutters pick up the undertones of the color, Shaffer says, modernizing the home in a cheerful way.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a combination you see a lot,\u201d she says, noting the unconventional choice of orange for the door and porch chairs. But the complementary navy of the shutters ties it all together, she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canaan, New York<\/a> | William Pitt Sotheby\u2019s International Realty<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pierce Peak<\/a>, a sleek \u201cbarndominium\u201d property in Canaan, New York, that won architects Burr and McCallum the AIA award, turns the farmhouse archetype on its head. \u201cYes, it\u2019s red,\u201d Shaffer says, \u201cbut they asked: \u2018How can we elevate this?\u2019 and they chose a rust red, which I think is so pretty.\u201d The clean lines\u2014no porches or ornate gables here\u2014and picture windows keep things modern.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warm color also appears in the covered porch and the barn, which can be seen through the windows. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t typically see a red floor in a large format,\u201d says Shaffer, but paired with industrial lights and beams, here it just works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Hoe<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

South Kensington, London<\/a> | United Kingdom Sotheby\u2019s International Realty<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Red walls are commonplace in Victorian homes on both sides of the Atlantic, but the colorful reception room of this period apartment<\/a> in South Kensington, London, exudes a contemporary charm. The furniture is kept relatively neutral to prevent the red from overwhelming, says Shaffer. And painting the ceiling \u201ca nice fresh white\u201d makes the space seem larger.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a real misnomer out there that when you do a bolder color, the room feels smaller,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen you take a color that bold all the way up to the ceiling, it really makes the room feel expansive.\u201d Also helpful? The large windows with blue shutters and casing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
