Ever notice how some homes captivate you while others don\u2019t turn your head? The colors in the design scheme may be at play. Whereas white encourages feelings<\/a> of calm and red gets people talking<\/a>, pink, which our series on color in luxury design turns to next, can be quietly powerful.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s warm and soothing, but can also be joyful and energizing,\u201d says Dane Austin<\/a>, an interior designer based in Boston. \u201cIt softens architecture, and it warms cool light and creates a sense of welcome.\u201d The color can easily be misunderstood, viewed as too \u201cgirly\u201d or meant only for babies. But it\u2019s surprisingly versatile, he stresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Villa Belvedere<\/a>, a clifftop Italian villa with breathtaking views of the port of Capri, looks like something out of a postcard, says Austin. \u201cThere\u2019s something so charming about the way that it\u2019s set in the landscape,\u201d he says, and the pink exterior helps it stand out against the greenery and clear blue sky.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Austin, who painted his own New England guest room Farrow & Ball\u2019s Setting Plaster<\/a> (a dusty pink) with lavender trim, pink is a crowd pleaser. \u201cThere are just so many shades,\u201d he says, \u201cI feel like there\u2019s something for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Newport, Rhode Island, where pink conjures images of faded hydrangeas in late summer, the walls of a bedroom in Stone House<\/a> read more salmon in shade, while a deckside reception room features two coral pink sofas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love the touches of red,\u201d says Austin, who finds the pink of the bedroom well balanced with the \u201cwarm wood furnishings and brass accents.\u201d With these walls, he adds, \u201cthere can only be one real star of the show. Everything else takes a back seat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A beachfront mansion<\/a> in Old Fort Bay\u2014a gated community in the Bahamas\u2014uses pink more sparingly, particularly in the bedroom, says Austin, where the richer, earthier tone is sophisticated. A paler shade is also used to great effect in a light-filled home office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe ombr\u00e8 effect behind the bedroom wall feels earthy and grounded,\u201d notes Austin, and the draperies pull from that color to stunning effect. \u201cThe pink enhances that beautiful Caribbean blue, which almost looks like a gemstone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old Brookville, New York<\/a> | Daniel Gale Sotheby\u2019s International Realty<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By contrast, a laundry room of a contemporary colonial<\/a> in Brookville, on Long Island\u2019s North Shore, uses a saturated pink to give an otherwise boring space rock\u2018n\u2019roll edge. It\u2019s in keeping with its owners\u2019 playful approach to color throughout the property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI appreciate the thought put into making a utility space somewhere that makes you smile,\u201d Austin says. The laundry room is not a space for entertaining, after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harbour Island, Bahamas<\/a> | Bahamas Sotheby\u2019s International Realty<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seafair<\/a>, another oceanfront Bahamas estate\u2014located, appropriately enough, on Harbour Island\u2019s Pink Sands Beach\u2014deploys pink in a more subdued way. The living room features a subtle pink stripe on the swivel chairs and a supersized pastel-pink sofa, while the rest of the space is kept tonal and neutral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s a good thing, says Austin, because \u201cwhen you use a hue like pink, it\u2019s often best served with a healthy dose of neutrals, which keeps it from feeling too saccharine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
