Some homes quickly fade from the mind while others are unforgettable. Often the design scheme is a factor. Pink can be surprisingly grounding<\/a> and red gets people talking<\/a>, while yellow\u2014which our series on color in design turns to next\u2014is notoriously hard to handle, but can deliver amazing results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I\u2019m thinking about yellow, the first room that comes up for me is the Yellow Room<\/a> by Nancy Lancaster and John Fowler,\u201d says London-based interior designer Rachel Chudley<\/a> of\u00a0 their famed reception room at 39 Brook Street, Mayfair. \u201cThat for me is yellow at its best\u2014it\u2019s somehow luminous, it\u2019s warm, it pulls everything together, but it also feels bold,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The variations\u2014and contradictions\u2014of yellow have captivated artists for centuries, as the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam explores in its current exhibition, \u201cYellow. Beyond Van Gogh\u2019s Colour<\/a>.\u201d However, they can also make the color tricky to work with, especially as a pastel. \u201cIt\u2019s really difficult not to make it too insipid,\u201d says Chudley, \u201cand maintain that kind of lightness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, she notices more and more people are gravitating to yellow in luxury design schemes again, while drawing on its layered historical associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Italian<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Florence, Italy<\/a> | Italy Sotheby\u2019s International Realty<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A charming 16th-century villa<\/a> near Florence feels in tune with its verdant surroundings thanks to its faded ochre exterior. \u201cIt\u2019s got that plastery warmth, which feels kind of natural there, very Italian,\u201d says Chudley, noting the extensive use of the color during the Florentine Renaissance.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weathered appearance, made all the more noticeable due to the material\u2019s application, also \u201clends itself to this clay-pot feel,\u201d she adds. Yellow is deployed throughout the interiors too, a striking backdrop to the home\u2019s extensive collection of traditional furniture and fine art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By contrast, Villa Measured<\/a>, a neoclassical residence within a gated estate on Sea Island, a private island in Georgia, appears lighter and brighter. \u201cThis yellow feels like the John Soane yellow,\u201d says Chudley, referring to the house museum<\/a> of the English architect Sir John Soane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soane\u2019s drawing room, painted Turner\u2019s Yellow\u2014a pigment developed in the late 18th century\u2014is truly a statement. The same hue works in Georgia, says Chudley, because \u201cthey\u2019re leaning into that classically proportioned architecture,\u201d which complements the clear blue sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sprawling estate<\/a> on Merritt Island, on the east coast of Florida, similarly pays homage to traditional Florentine villas with its butter-yellow exterior and distinctive Italian stone fountains.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside, the sizable Tuscan-style kitchen and adjacent dining area continue the theme, though the true star is the home\u2019s neoclassical exterior, which contrasts beautifully with Florida\u2019s violet-streaked sunset. \u201cThis is a perfect hot weather color,\u201d says Chudley. Anything lighter would feel washed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In London, meanwhile, a spacious townhouse<\/a> on Kendal Street near Hyde Park uses a turmeric shade of yellow to set off the grayness outside. \u201cIt\u2019s the classic London brick with the gray London light coming through,\u201d says Chudley.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key part of selecting a paint color is working with or against the view, she says, and here the color draws your eye away from the window. \u201cIf you have an amazing view, you want to bring it in,\u201d she says. Here, the color feels \u201clike a warm hug\u201d on a cold, foggy day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
