Southgate

The neighborhood of Southgate is closely associated with one of Houston’s greatest institutions, Rice University. Southgate’s northern border, heavily tree-lined University Boulevard, separates the Rice campus from the neighborhood, and Southgate itself boasts some of the city’s most magnificent oak tree canopies.

Southgate proper is defined by University Boulevard on the north; Holcombe Boulevard on the south; Travis Street on the east; and Greenbriar Street on the west; the Southgate Annex is east of Main Street. The main Southgate neighborhood is divided into three deed-restricted sections.

The majority of Southgate elementary-age school children are served by Oran M. Roberts’s Elementary School. Roberts was recognized in 2009 as a Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) Honor Roll School, a Texas Education Administration (TEA) 2009-2010 Exemplary School and recipient of four TEA Gold Performance Awards in 2009, and is listed as one of Texas Monthly magazine’s Best Public Schools in Texas.
