La Costa Golf Resort
La Costa Resort and Spa is home to 36 holes of golf that make up Southern California’s only Gold Medal Golf Resort, as determined by Golf Magazine. La Costa has enjoyed a storied history, hosting numerous professional events and countless celebrities and professional athletes from other sports since course construction completed in 1965.
The 36 holes are spread out over two distinct courses, The Champions Course and The Legend Course. The Champions Course is the only California course designed by Dick Wilson and has hosted over 37 PGA events, and most recently was the site of the 2012 LPGA Kia Classic. From 1969 to 1998, the PGA Tour’s Tournament of Champions was held at La Costa. And from 1999 to 2006, the World Golf Championships–Accenture Match Play Championship called La Costa home. A 2011 redesign of the course included modifications on the bunkers, tee boxes, fairways, greens, bridges and surrounding wetlands.
La Costa’s south course is in the midst of a complete renovation, scheduled for a late 2013 reopening as the newly christened Legends Course. All 18 holes will undergo a complete reimagining, including new types of grass being planted, a relocation or redesign of every green, a total reconstruction of every bunker, tee box refurbishment and widening of the fairways. The aim of the Legends Course is to offer a more spacious course than the Champions Course, but with a set of unique challenges.
Over the years, some of the world’s most famous golfers have played competitive rounds at La Costa, including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. The Club can also claim an impressive list of famous celebrity members, including Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, and Desi Arnaz. Rounds have also been played by actors Clint Eastwood, Andy Williams, Jim Garner, Ray Bolger, and William Powell and the course was even visited by legendary athletes like Micky Mantle, Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Joe Namath, and Johnny Unitas.
