Memorial at a Glance
Sotheby's International RealtyMemorial – the very name conjures up miles of beautiful trees, large lots, manicured lawns, and some of the most expensive homes in Houston. Although Memorial Drive originates in downtown Houston, the “Memorial area” is generally regarded as those neighborhoods that lie between the 610-Loop on the east, Highway 6 on the west, I-10 on the north, and Buffalo Bayou on the south. Almost the entire area is served by the award-winning Spring Branch Independent School District.
At Loop-610 near Memorial Drive, the Houstonian, a complex consisting of a luxury residential high-rise, a fine hotel, and a health and fitness center, anchors Memorial’s eastern end. Just a few yards north is Stablewood, a gated luxury-home community developed in the 1990’s. The large lots in neighboring Bayou Woods, Sherwood Forest, and Pinewood Estates are perfect settings for both older and newly-constructed expansive homes.
The Memorial Villages, independent municipalities with their own police and fire departments, water systems, and political structures, are found west of Chimney Rock road. From east to west, they are: Hunters Creek, Piney Point, Hedwig, Bunker Hill, and Spring Valley (north of I-10).
As Memorial Drive winds westward through beautiful wooded terrain, intersecting narrow lanes and quiet streets lead to special neighborhoods. One such is Sandlewood, where homes surround three lakes used for boating, swimming and fishing. Others include Memorial Forest, Whispering Oaks, Frostwood, Tealwood, Fonn Villas, and Memorial Pines.
Along Gessner and Beltway-8, upscale shopping, dining and entertainment abound, along with Hermann Memorial Hospital and Health Center at Memorial City. Beltway-8 provides the area with quick access to all parts of the city; both airports are within a 30-minute drive, I-10 is immediately accessible, and I-59 is only minutes away.
West of Beltway-8 (“The Belt”), Memorial Bend, Gaywood, Yorkchester, Yorkshire, Wilchester, Nottingham, Nottingham Forest, and Westchester are neighborhoods with wooded lots and a green-space along the bayou with a jogging trail and horse stables.
The westernmost Memorial neighborhoods are Memorial Thicket, Thornwood, Barker’s Landing, Fleetwood, and Marywood. The continued western expansion of the city, the excellent school systems, and the beauty and size of the lots all ensure the continued viability and popularity of the Memorial area.
