Monterrey is the third largest city in Mexico and among the wealthiest, boasting one of the country’s highest standards of living. The city thrives as an industrial center with a global reach, an entrepreneurial powerhouse fueled by a skilled workforce and the brain trust that comes with being a major university town.
Monterrey is the capital of the state of Nuevo León in northern Mexico at the base of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range and about 130 miles from the Texas border. Waterfalls, caves and canyons, all an easy excursion just outside the city, are a launching pad for ecoadventures like cliff climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking and boating.
It is also a metropolis of art and architecture. The historic quarter known as Barrio Antiguo showcases the legacy of Old Monterrey with its cobblestone streets and colonial architecture of adobe brick buildings. And yet, Barrio Antiguo is a trendy spot with fashionable shops and vibrant nightlife. Nearby is the green esplanade of Macroplaza, one of the largest urban squares in the world. It is surrounded by the city’s most important buildings including the cathedral, government palace and court house. Among its cultural institutions, the Museum of Contemporary Art, along the Macroplaza is regarded as one of the country’s finest. Though founded in 1596, Monterrey is a progressive city that is surprisingly modern.
Monterrey tends to be less on the radar of tourists than on those in the business community. The city attracts affluent international real estate investors, in large part to the presence of global firms.
The suburb of San Pedro Garza Garcia is one of the most affluent municipalities not only in Mexico but in the whole of Latin America--with the designer shops to go along with it. Buyers can choose from sophisticated apartments with mountain views, opulent estates and Mediterranean-style villas. Its location is ideal. Garza Garcia borders the green oasis of Chipinque National Park.
