Ranking the Top 50 Start-Ups<\/a>,\u201d 37 out of 50 venture-capital-backed companies are based in California &#8211; a state in which the largest share of venture capitol is invested. The statistics published in <em>WSJ\u2019s<\/em> third annual ranking of the top venture-capital-backed companies, reveals an interesting batch of contenders. Many find this to be a promising sign for California\u2019s economic foothold. Eligibility for the rankings include recent growth in value, fundraising success, and track record of the company&#8217;s founding members. Ranked the 9<sup>th<\/sup> largest economy in the world, California is also the only U.S. state to make the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/2012\/09\/11\/4807346\/california-economy-ranked-9th.html\">Top Ten list of the world\u2019s largest economies in 2011<\/a>\u00a0(in billions of U.S. dollars), which is compiled from World Bank data and other sources.
