Its strong support system understands its vital role in the community, having donated over $26 million since the Barton Health Foundation’s 1990 debut. Funds have been used to acquire medical equipment atypical to rural hospitals, give a leg up to wellness-related non-profits (Middle School Club Live and Bread & Broth were among 12 organizations awarded grants in 2021), and build state-of-the-art facilities such as the Barton Center for Orthopedics and Wellness that opened in 2018 through gifts from “Angel of Tahoe” Lisa Maloff and the late Dr. Paul Fry, II. Along with its popular Mother’s Day Golf Classic, the Foundation introduces another Barton Oncology benefit, “Tux & Tennies” at Lake Tahoe AleWorX, located at The Y, on September 17. bartonhealth.org/

THE TAHOE FUND
Synonymous with stewardship of our natural areas, the Tahoe Fund has put millions of dollars toward more than 60 environmental projects. A new community park is currently on its plate of causes. The Tahoe Fund’s $75,000 matching campaign with South Lake Tahoe’s Friends of Ski Run will transform the unofficial playground into Ski Run Community Park. It will incorporate design elements sketched by children from Bijou Elementary and the local Boys and Girls Club. Another recent initiative is Lake Tahoe’s largest invasive species removal project to restore 17 acres of wetlands in the Taylor and Tallac creeks and marshes. tahoefund.org

TRUCKEE DONNER LAND TRUST
Truckee Donner Land Trust adds another 290 acres to the 40,000+ acres it has preserved through land acquisitions, exchanges and easements since 1990. It’s a huge win for wildlife like the Loyalton-Truckee Deer Herd that migrate through its rolling hills of mixed forest, meadows and riparian habitat. People also benefit from its recreational opportunities. Green space in the heart of Truckee has grown, too. Truckee Springs now totals nearly 70 acres, thanks to a donation of land upstream from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The aptly named public charity supports community philanthropy and other local nonprofits through grants and by connecting donors to causes. Started by community members with passionate philanthropists Carla Hanson and Warren Trepp and based in Incline Village, Nev., one could say it’s been a fruitful venture. More than $90 million in grants have been awarded under its stewardship, and it consistently receives stellar ratings from Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest charity evaluator. Donors appreciate that they can trust Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation to carry out their fund’s intent at every stage. The website explains the many types of funds, such as legacy, donor-advised and fields of interest. Serving as an umbrella for many local nonprofits, Parasol offers benefits such as grant-awarded space for organizations to develop and thrive. parasol.org

TAHOE TRUCKEE COMMUNIT Y FOUNDATION
William Hewlett’s matching donation of $1 million to establish the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation (TTCF) in 1998 is the gift that keeps on giving. The role of a Community Foundation is to improve the quality of life for residents and respond to the greatest needs with resources and innovative solutions. In addition to scholarships and grantmaking, TTCF convenes diverse stakeholders to collaborate on issues around family strengthening, forest health and workforce housing. During the pandemic, TTCF’s grantmaking services became more nimble and responsive in order to get multiple rounds of Emergency Response Funding out the door as quickly as possible. In 2021, a three-year, $30 million Forest Futures campaign was launched to align local organizations around fire mitigation, infrastructure and forest health. With strong-on-the-ground relationships, TTCF will consistently be awarding grants to the projects that will have the greatest impact for our region, staying true to Hewlett’s desire to protect this community. ttcf.net

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF NORTHERN NEVADA
The Community Foundation of Northern Nevada’s motto is “connecting people who care with causes that matter.” More than $155 million in grants and scholarships from more than 262 charitable funds have been distributed since its inception in 1998. Formerly with Sierra Nevada Journeys, an outdoor science education nonprofit, new president and CEO Eaton Dunkelberger is among its diverse team of board members, staff and volunteers whose core work consists of philanthropic advising, grantmaking and community engagement. Established by the Community Foundation in 2016, their Community Endowment provides an unending financial resource for nonprofits to tackle regional challenges. The Community Endowment’s investment earnings are used to fund charitable activities across Northern Nevada and are administered annually by a team of Community Foundation board members, staff, and volunteers representing diverse perspectives. In 2022, $168,000 was granted from the Community Endowment to 11 nonprofit organizations. nevadafund.org

SHANE MCCONKEY FOUNDATION

While most of its fundraising is lighthearted, the Shane McConkey Foundation is serious about its mission to support causes that benefit environmental education and the Tahoe Truckee community. Since its inception in 2011, the 100- percent, volunteer-driven nonprofit has raised nearly $1 million for local nonprofits with grants given to more than 34 different beneficiaries. Its current focus is the Shane McConkey Eco Challenge, which was created to inspire youth to be stewards of the environment from a young age. Through direct action by participating youth, the project has produced tangible results such as the implementation of solar panels, low flow toilets, LED lightbulbs, reusable lunch trays, composting bins and refillable water bottle stations at area schools. “Don’t Drop the Top” is a popular project that took off last year with local kids collecting buckets full of soda bottle tops at stores like New Moon and CVS in Truckee. The collected plastic is repurposed for park benches.
