Of all the accolades and honors that can be bestowed upon a city, perhaps being named the happiest town in America takes the lead. A 2014 study by the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research surveyed contentment levels, and Charlottesville, Virginia, came out on top.

Its location doesn’t hurt. Charlottesville is a cosmopolitan city set in Central Virginia by the Blue Ridge Mountains. Some of the country’s most beautiful scenic roads are along here. Come autumn, leaf peepers flock to the area in droves. The area has a four-season climate without temperature extremes.

Charlottesville is a quintessential college town with a big-time legacy. The University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the only university in the U.S. that is. Home to both Jefferson and another founding father, James Monroe, its colonial-era past has shaped its architecture. The city is filled with established neighborhoods of classical revival homes and mature landscaping.  It is also a dynamic, growing city that Forbes placed on its 2015 list of Best Small Places for Business and Careers. It is served by a well-connected airport and daily commuter train service to Washington, DC.

The city has a lively music and arts scene and a brick-paved pedestrian mall--one of the country’s longest--in the downtown historic district. The countryside is dotted with landmark country manors, equestrian estates, rolling farm lands, fishing and small-game hunting properties and large tracts of undeveloped land. Here the great outdoors beckons with opportunities for river kayaking, hiking on the Appalachian Trail, mountain biking, golfing and taste-testing along the Monticello Wine Trail, named after Jefferson’s historic home. Virginia is the country’s fifth largest wine producer. The Monticello Viticultural Area, on the eastern flank of the Blue Ridge Mountains features some 30 wineries.
