In the heart of Colorado, entrepreneur Lisa Hara is leading a movement that bridges forestry, sustainability, and economic development. As the Owner and CEO of The Mill, Hara has transformed a traditional circular sawmill into a forward-looking responsible timber production. But her work isn’t just about lumber — it’s about reimagining how Colorado communities can grow sustainably while preserving the land that defines them.

From Forest Stewardship to Innovation

Hara, a Colorado native, began her timber industry journey with a focus on fire mitigation and beetle kill salvage. Hara said “I was in awe of the beauty in back country. But I saw the damage of what the beetle kill had done and wondered what would happen if managed properly.” These issues have plagued Colorado forests for decades, leaving behind millions of dead trees that increase wildfire risks and disrupt ecosystems. Instead of letting these challenges define the industry, Hara saw an opportunity.

In 2023, she acquired The Mill with a mission to preserve a legacy business while charting a more innovative and sustainable future. Today, The Mill is sourcing local timber, experimenting with mass timber technologies, and embracing carbon recapture solutions — all while creating jobs and supporting regional economic growth.

Why Real Estate & Timber Belong Together

At first glance, real estate and forestry might seem like separate worlds. But for Colorado’s mountain communities, they are deeply connected. Developers, architects, and brokers are increasingly under pressure to deliver projects that are both environmentally responsible and authentically local.”Colorado isnt historically a logging state. There isnt a single mill in Denver, in fact, Colorado imports all wood products from the Pacific North West. The goal is for the Mill to help close the loop of local timber which creates a demand and loggers to fill that demand. Its a perfect supply and demand relationship.” This is where Hara’s vision offers a natural partnership by using:

A Platform for Impact

Hara describes The Mill not simply as a business, but as “a platform for impact in Colorado’s evolving forest economy.” For real estate professionals, this creates a chance to align with a mission that extends beyond profits — one that preserves landscapes, supports local jobs, and builds healthier communities.

In a time when buyers are demanding greener homes, developers are seeking sustainable materials, and mountain towns are searching for balanced growth, The Mill offers a powerful bridge. By partnering with real estate, Lisa Hara is proving that Colorado’s forests can be both a resource and a legacy.
